A great day of racing in Lake PlacidLast May Jean Dessureault, France Carignan and Karine Desormeaux probably never imagined they’d even be here in Lake Placid racing an Ironman. At that point they were still trying to figure out why they were still alive and their three friends, Sandra de la Garza Aguilar, Christine Deschamps and Lyn Duhamel weren’t.

“Doing this Ironman is a gift from God,” Dessureault told us at Friday’s Welcome Dinner when he, Carignan and Desormeaux were honored as the Ford Everyday Heroes for this race because of their determination to “Go Forward” in memory of their friends, who were also training for this race. All six were riding their bikes to a training camp when they were hit by a car from behind. Three made it and raced today. Three didn’t.

The three Ford Everyday Heroes were just a few of the more than 2,600 athletes who started this race in beautiful Mirror Lake this morning. Among all of those athletes were as many amazing stories. Athletes raising money for ALS (Bob Heins, who was racing in the 70-74 age group and finished fourth), for brain aneurysm research (Hilary Phelps and another eight athletes competing with TeamCindy), competing on a tandem bike because they’re legally blind (Ryan Van Praet, who went 12:21 here today and four other athletes who were competing with C-Different) … I could go on for a while, but suffice it to say that there were an abundance of amazing stories out here today.

How much do people love this race? A lot of the 3,500 volunteers here today were here in order to get themselves a spot in the line tomorrow so they could register for next year’s race. The folks at the Janus Creation Station were so jammed with people making signs for their athletes that they ran out of signs on Friday.

Today we saw one of the largest Ironman fields in history enjoy a day that began with included the almost-inevitable bit of rain we’re used to seeing here in Lake Placid, followed by some pretty amazing conditions that made for an ideal race day. They know how to host their sports here in the Olympic village – for the last 12 years they’ve been making Ironman athletes feel very much at home here in Lake Placid.

As we head into our last hour of racing, there are about 200 athletes still to be welcomed across the finish line here. Tomorrow we’ll see thousands of athletes book their accommodation a year in advance, just as they lined up a year ahead of time to enjoy the experience again.

Thanks for joining us here at Ironmanlive for our coverage of Ford Ironman Lake Placid.

Racing for a great cause ...Hilary Phelps was part of the nine-member TeamCindy team, competing here today to raise money and awareness for brain aneurysm research.

No surprise that a Phelps would swim fast - she did the swim in 56 minutes today and came across the line in 14:21:32.

Michael takes the Begg Brother's raceThe youngest of the three Begg brothers, Michael, has finished today's race (12:48:18) winning the bragging rights for the family here at Ford Ironman Lake Placid. Tom and Bill have yet to make it to the line, but we'll likely see them soon.

I just learned last week that Bill's wife, Leah, was also competing here today - she finished in 13:46.
